Description
Dated 1862, 1 Castle Moffat Cottages is a single-storey, symmetrical row of farm cottages accompanied by pavilioned outbuildings. The cottages are constructed of squared and snecked rubble with droved ashlar dressings and harled end gables, featuring stone mullions.
The north elevation displays a round arched pend at the centre, flanked by windows. Gabled porches project from the flanking bays, with bipartites facing north and doorways leading to the pend side. Further windows are positioned between the porches, and additional gabled porches are found in the penultimate bays – again, detailed as above but with doorways on their outer sides.
The south elevation features a coped, shouldered wallhead stack above the central round arched pend, incorporating a dated panel. Single windows flank the pend, with two bipartites on each side and single windows in the outer bays. Gabled dormers were added in the later 19th century. Gabled outbuildings are positioned to the northeast and northwest, with doorways on their court side, linked to the cottages by a curtain wall, which is now backed by flat-roofed outbuildings.
The windows are sash and case style with a four-pane glazing pattern. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and the porches originally had finials. Timber eaves brackets are present on the porches. Ridge and gable end stacks are also visible.
The cottages are listed at category B, recognised as a complete group of specially designed farm cottages. A steading located to the south is listed separately.
