Description

This is a circa 1860 baronially detailed farm steading situated at Castle Moffat. The steading is constructed from red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring chamfered arrises to the segmental arches and grey slate roofing. The plan is rambling.

The South range is single-storied, with an off-centre opening to the left. To the right are blank stable walls, with a single door and a cartshed to the left. The range is closed at the outer angles by two-stage towers. These have corbelled angle parapets above the eaves in the outer corners, and a rounded angle to the southwest corner at ground level, corbelled to square above. An advanced gabled block flanks the courtyard entrance to the left, with rounded angles corbelled to square above, and a segmental cart arch. Four segmental arches are set into the recessed left bays, with the arch in the outer tower now blocked. A large barn, dating from the later 19th century, was added to the North, incorporating machinery doors to the West by a former blocked arch. A square tower mirrors the one to the southeast in the northeast corner.

A modern, covered cattle court within the courtyard is not considered to be of special interest. The steading is listed at category B and recognised as a good example of the improvement steadings which developed throughout East Lothian in the mid-19th century, and for its relationship to contemporary cottages located to the south (which are listed separately). The listing excludes the modern cattle courts.
