Description
Dated 1862, 3 Castle Moffat Cottages is a single-storey, symmetrical row of farm cottages accompanied by pavilioned outbuildings. The cottages are constructed of squared and snecked rubble with droved ashlar dressings and harled end gables, featuring stone mullions.
The north elevation displays a round arched pend at its centre, flanked by windows. Gabled porches project from the flanking bays, incorporating bipartites facing north and doorways leading to the pend. Windows are situated between the porches, with further gabled porches to the penultimate bays, mirroring the detailing but with doorways on their outer sides.
The south elevation features a coped, shouldered wallhead stack above the central round arched pend, bearing a dated panel. Single windows flank the pend, with two bipartites on each side and single windows in the outer bays. Gabled dormers were added in the later 19th century. Gabled outbuildings extend to the northeast and northwest, with doorways on the courtyard side, connected to the cottages by a curtain wall, which is now backed by flat-roofed outbuildings.
The windows are sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and the porches have timber eaves brackets; the porches formerly all had finials. Ridge and gable end stacks are present.
The cottages are listed at Grade B as a complete group of specially designed farm cottages. An associated steading, located to the south, is listed separately.
