Description
These are a row of four farm cottages, dated 1862, forming a symmetrical group with associated outbuildings. The cottages are single-storeyed and built of squared and snecked rubble stone with droved ashlar dressings and harled gable ends. They feature stone mullion windows.
The north elevation has a round arched pend centrally placed, flanked by windows. Gabled porches project from the flanking bays, with two-light windows facing north and doorways leading to the pend. Further windows are positioned to either side, and another two gabled porches advance from the penultimate bays, detailed similarly with doorways on the outer sides.
The south elevation features a coped, shouldered wallhead stack above the central round arched pend, incorporating a dated panel. Single windows flank the pend, with two two-light windows on each side and single windows in the outer bays. Gabled dormers were added in the later 19th century. Gabled outbuildings are located to the north-east and north-west, with doorways facing the courtyard, and are linked to the cottages by a curtain wall that is now backed by flat-roofed outbuildings.
The windows are sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and the porches have timber eaves brackets, formerly all topped with finials. Ridge and gable end stacks are present.
The building is a group-valued example of specially designed farm cottages. The associated steading, located to the south, is listed separately.
