Walled Garden, Tyneholm, Easter Pencaitland

The Walled Garden at Tyneholm in Easter Pencaitland is a notable structure designed by William Burn in 1835. It features a long, asymmetrical mansion with a square plan main block that is two stories high, linked by two lower bays to a similarly lower quadrangular service block. The exterior is made of warm-coloured ashlar with stugged detailing, including base and string courses.

On the south elevation, the main house has three gabled asymmetrical bays on the left, with the right bay advanced and featuring a strapworked doorpiece. There is a wide bay on the outer left with a canted window at the ground floor and a tripartite window on the first floor. To the east, there are two slightly recessed bays connecting to a wide gabled advanced bay of the service block, which has tripartite windows on both floors and a square tower to the right with blind openings. Further to the right, there is another gabled bay with tripartite windows, followed by two regular bays and a wide gabled outer bay with tripartites.

The north elevation includes a canted window in the outer right gabled bay and a French window in the center bay of the main house, with recessed linking bays adjoining the service block. The west elevation presents three near-symmetrical bays with tall ground floor windows; two of the three first-floor windows are blocked. The predominant glazing pattern is 12-pane in sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with large grey slates. The tower features a spire with a lead finial, gablet coped skews, bracketted skewputts, and kneelers, along with coped stacks topped with uniform cans.

The walled garden, also designed by William Burn and dated 1837, is located to the east of the house. It has a long irregular plan with a curved wall to the north, constructed of rubble with ashlar coping and a serpentine shape to the south, lined with brick. The south side features a gabled doorway with gablet skews, skewputts, and a dated shield.
