Description

Thurston Mains is an early 19th-century farmhouse with a walled garden. The main house is a symmetrical two-storey, three-bay structure with later single-storey extensions to the rear. The front of the house is harled, with decorative ashlar dressings and quoins. The south elevation (the main entrance) has three bays grouped towards the centre. The ground floor openings have chamfered arrises, and a decorative fanlight sits above the front door, flanked by windows. There are three windows on the first floor. The north elevation features a later broad, low, gabled projection, a lower, piend-roofed extension adjoining an earlier cottage – formerly used as offices – and a piend-roofed porch added to the west side of the main house. The windows are mostly sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, though some modern windows are present on the east elevation. The main house has a piend roof with wallhead stacks, and is covered with grey slates.

The walled garden is rectangular, with squared and snecked sandstone walls about eight feet high, featuring semi-circular coping. The east and west walls curve gently. There is a wide opening leading from the house and a pedestrian gateway to the west. A steading lies to the southwest, but is not included in this listing. A separate steading cottage is listed separately.
