Description
This is a 19th-century dovecot, likely built in the later part of the century. It has a square plan and is constructed of red rubble sandstone with dressed ashlar detailing. The ashlar includes a rat course, an eaves course, and a recessed panel featuring flight holes. A doorway and a window opening are positioned off-centre to the left on the south side; the window is above the doorway. There are twelve flight holes arranged in a row above the rat course, under the eaves. Narrow openings are present on the east and west sides at ground level, and to the upper stages. A blind opening is located on the north side of the upper stage. The roof is a grey slate pyramid, topped with a simple weathervane. Some of the narrow openings include louvres. The dovecot was originally situated on the Thurston House estate (demolished in 1952), and it is located near stables of a similar date. The statutory address is Thurston Dovecot.
