Description
The Jubilee Horse Trough, dated 1887, stands on the west road from Innerwick Village to Thurston House, provided through the philanthropy of Richard Hunter of Thurston. Constructed of cast iron, the trough is shaped like a bath and features a cast-iron shell-niche above, adorned with a decorative surround bearing the inscription "V Jubilee R 1887." The niche is set within a shaped gable constructed of squared rubble and ashlar red sandstone. A rectangular slate panel is set into the gable head, contained within a chamfered surround and inscribed with a moral poem. The original gable finial has been lost. The trough is representative of late Victorian estate philanthropy, a style mirrored in the village by the slate panel on Tyme Cottage, also a result of Hunter's patronage.
