Description

Birrell’s House is a late 18th century two-storey cottage situated in Innerwick, built over a burn at its northern end. The construction consists of random rubble with stugged dressings. The west elevation features an oversailing forestair leading to a walled porch with a swept roof that breaks the eaves; the porch is open to the north. A small window sits to the right on the ground floor, flanked by a larger window to the outer right. The east elevation has a doorway at ground level towards the right, otherwise appearing blank with evidence of previously blocked openings. The south gable is mostly blank, with an upper window to the right and a further opening below. The north gable displays potential evidence of a blocked opening. Brick gable end stacks and pantile roofing are present. Internally, the first-floor flooring has been removed, and newer roofing is visible. There is an outline of a former chimneypiece on the north gable’s raised breast at the first floor. The building likely functioned as mill cottages at some point. The statutory address is Birrell’s House, Garden Cottage, Innerwick.
