Description
East Lodge, part of the Thurston House estate, is a mid-19th century gate lodge of rectangular plan with an attic. It is constructed from squared and snecked red sandstone with stugged and broached ashlar dressings.
The south elevation has two bays. A boarded door is located to the right, and a bipartite window is to the left. A crowstepped gabled dormer breaks the eaves in the centre. The north elevation features a lean-to rubble addition and a slate-hung piend-roofed dormer. A bowed bay with a stone mullioned bipartite window is centrally positioned on the west elevation. The east elevation has three irregular openings, with the leftmost opening being blind.
Diamond-pane glazing in casement windows is present, some bordered. The piend roof is covered with grey slates with swept eaves, and a central ashlar stack. A low coped ashlar quadrant extends to the east, supported by four square, rusticated, and corniced ashlar piers.
The lodge originally served Thurston House, which was demolished in 1952. A northern lodge and dovecot are listed separately. It is listed at category B as an example of the cottage ornée style of lodge.
