Description
This is an earlier 19th-century gate lodge with later 19th-century additions, originally serving Thurston House, which has since been demolished. The lodge is built of cream-coloured ashlar sandstone with a base course.
The elevation facing the drive has an advanced wall on the left, a recessed central section, and a recessed section on the right. A latticed loggia, which was originally present, has been recently removed. The recessed central section features a round-headed doorway and two flanking windows, all with raised keystones and voussoirs at the impost level. There is an additional doorway in the re-entrant angle on the left, and similarly detailed windows are found on the south and in the bowed north bays. A rear wing and an additional section obscure one window of the bow.
The windows are small-pane sashes in casements. A polygonal ashlar stack with coping is located at the centre. The original lodge has overhanging eaves supported by timber brackets and a piend-roofed grey slate covering.
The gate piers are rusticated ashlar, with one retaining an urn finial. A former "Chinese" porch is no longer present. The North Lodge and gate piers were associated with East Lodge and a dovecot that are listed separately.
