Description
2 Smeaton Grove is a classical double villa built in the earlier to mid 19th century. The building features a grey tooled ashlar frontage, with rubble sides and rear, and includes base and first-floor cill courses, an eaves course, and a blocking course to the northwest. The windows have ashlar mullions and chamfered arrises.
On the northwest elevation, there are five symmetrical bays. At the ground level, two small, narrow windows are located at the center, with doorways on either side that have shallow pediments supported by decorative stone consoles. The doorways feature deep-set panelled doors with plate glass fanlights above. The first-floor windows are positioned above these doorways. Each outer bay has a canted window at ground level, topped with a leaded half-piend roof, while the first floor features tripartite windows.
The southeast elevation has a gabled projection at ground level in the center, with first-floor windows in the bays flanking this center. The northeast elevation is largely blank, with a narrow first-floor window located off-center to the left. The southwest elevation has slightly advanced bays to the right, which include two first-floor windows, while the bays to the left are blank.
The building has lying- and horizontal-pane glazing patterns in its sash and case windows, some of which are four-pane and plate glass. It features an M-shaped piend roof covered with grey slates, along with a corniced wallhead and mutual gable stacks, some of which have been repaired and rendered, while original cans are retained.
The property also includes ashlar pedestrian gateways with blocking courses flanking each outer bay, connected to retaining walls. The harl-pointed rubble walls have semi-circular coping on the higher sections and ashlar coping on the lower walls at the northwest.
