Description

Shepherd House, located at 45 Inveresk Village Road in Inveresk, dates back to around 1710. This is a two-storey, three-bay house that features single-storey wings and a porch that were added later. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar dressings and has chamfered arrises.

On the north elevation, there is a gabled porch made of ashlar and harl at the center, which contains two-leaf panelled doors. Flanking the porch are windows in the outer bays, with additional windows above on the first floor. The outer wings are slightly recessed, with the west wing having a flat roof and the east wing featuring a piend roof.

The south elevation has a central door, with windows in the flanking bays and above in each first-floor bay. There is a modern conservatory addition on the west wing, along with a door and window on the east wing.

The east and west elevations have single-storey wings that abut retaining walls at ground level. The east wing has a door and a small window, while both wings feature curvilinear gables with ashlar coping and scrolled skewputts. The west gable has two first-floor windows and both gables have attic windows.

The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates and features swept eaves, along with slate-hung swept dormers added around 1950 that have casement windows. There are skylights on both roof pitches, and the corniced end stacks retain their cans.

Inside, there is a stone scale and platt stair with a wrought-iron balustrade leading to the upper sections. The foot of the stair has an ashlar door surround with chamfered arrises. The interior also features 18th-century dado panelling and decorative plaster cornices.

The property includes retaining walls, gatepiers, and gates made of rubble, with stretches of ashlar coping. The ashlar gatepiers support wrought- and cast-iron gates that have a simple overthrow with a lamp bracket.
