Description

The building at 35 Inveresk Village Road, Inveresk, is a pair of early 18th century dwellings, with subsequent remodelling occurring between 1967 and 1969. It occupies a corner site and comprises two two-storey, three-bay end-terraced houses joined to a further two-storey, three-bay house to the northeast. The exterior is predominantly harled, accented with ashlar margins, with base and ground floor lintel courses on number 35. First-floor windows are positioned close to the eaves. A former smiddy is attached to the northeast.

The southeast (Double Dykes) elevation is irregular and three bays wide. The central entrance features a squared sandstone rubble surround with the inscription 'THE LAIGH HOUSE' on the lintel. A small opening sits to the right of the door, with further openings at ground floor level to the outer left and right, and one opening in each outer bay on the first floor.

The southwest (Inveresk Village Road) elevation is divided into three bays on the left and a further irregular three bays on the right. The central entrance on the left (number 35) has deep-set two-leaf timber doors; a wall-mounted post box is positioned to the right. To the right, a square opening is framed by squared sandstone rubble jambs, lintel, and ashlar cill, with a smaller square opening above. First-floor openings are present in the central and right bays. A gable faces Double Dykes, displaying openings at ground and first floor levels, with the first-floor opening lacking a surround. A canted corner is accentuated by a corbel at first-floor level.

The north (rear) elevation is irregular, consisting of four bays with a two-bay painted rubble return. An entrance is located on the outer right, framed by a chamfered squared rubble surround and a vertically boarded timber door. A small square opening, without a surround, is present at first-floor level centrally. A single-storey lean-to extends to the right of the return, featuring a window opening to the right. A glazed L-plan lean-to, added in 1994, fills the re-entrant angle. The right section of the glazed lean-to is built upon the low rubble walls of a former pigsty. A later square opening has been added at first floor level on the right side of the rear elevation.

The former smiddy, abutting the northeast corner, is a single-storey, two-bay section with a piended roof and a gable to the right. It's constructed of sandstone rubble with tooled margins on the southwest (principal) elevation. An entrance opening, fitted with a timber stable door, is located on the right, alongside two-leaf timber garage doors on the gable. A boundary wall runs adjoined to the left.

Twelve-pane glazing is found in timber sash and case windows with horns. The roof is covered in pantiles, with a tile eaves easing course visible on the southwest (Double Dykes) elevation. Ashlar coped skews are present on the southwest (Inveresk Village Road) block. The stacks are predominantly harled with ashlar coping and circular clay cans, with one brick stack located to the northwest. A course of road setts fronts the southeast (Double Dykes) elevation.

The interior, observed in 2011, was remodelled around 1968-69. The first floor of number 35 is internally connected to number 39. A painted rubble wall is visible in the living room, and stone setts form the floor of the smiddy, which has a replacement timber roof structure.
