Description
Catherine Lodge is a substantial, symmetrical, three-storey-and-cellar house dated 1769, with a two-storey addition to the east dating to the early 19th century. The house is situated in Inveresk Village Road, Inveresk.
The exterior is finished with orange-painted harl, with painted ashlar dressings, a base course, and a cornice. The south elevation features a consoled and corniced doorway at the centre, approached by a short flight of stone steps with decorative cast-iron balustrades, and a two-leaf panelled door. The fenestration is regular, with windows in the flanking bays and to each bay on the first and second floors, with the second-floor windows being smaller. A wallhead gable is centrally located, topped with an ashlar stack that incorporates an armorial panel, the date 1769, and the initials "AC".
The early 19th century addition to the east is a single bay, two storeys high, with a piend roof, slightly recessed, and windows to both north and south elevations, larger than those of the main villa. A flat-roofed porch and lower bays were added later to the east.
The north elevation presents five symmetrical bays, with short double flights of stone steps leading to the central bays and simple iron railings. A stair window and a second-floor window are centrally located, with doors flanked by centre and windows above on the first and second floors, and ground and first-floor windows in the outer bays.
The west elevation is blank, with two first-floor windows at the centre and to the left. The windows are sash and case with small panes, and the roof is steeply piended with grey slates and lead flashings, with swept eaves. End wallhead gable stacks are harled.
The interior retains largely 18th-century decoration. A winding stone staircase with a decorative wrought-iron balustrade is present, as well as a depressed hall archway with fluted pilasters. A consoled corniced doorcase frames the dining room door. An Adamesque chimneypiece is also present. The drawing room, located on the first floor, has a high ceiling, which lowers the ceiling height of the nursery above. Cellar windows, which originally served the east elevation, are blocked by the early 19th century addition.
To the east of the house stands a piend-roofed stable block of rectangular plan, constructed from heavily pointed sandstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings. The stable door has a fanlight, flanked by windows on the west elevation; garage doors have been inserted to the right, and there are three hayloft windows above. The end elevations are blank, as is the rear, with a hayloft window at the centre. The roof is covered with grey slates. Original timber stall divisions and flagstones have been retained within the stable.
Rubble retaining walls, with harl pointing at intervals and an ashlar coping to the south (along the roadside), flank the driveway. Corniced, painted ashlar gatepiers incorporated into the retaining walls, with urn finials, mark the drive to the south. Squared sandstone rubble piers with block caps flank the gateway to the north of the stables.
