Description

The Main Gate and Gate-Lodge at Carberry Tower, designed by David Bryce around 1860, is a single-storey and attic structure built in the Scottish 17th century style. It features a single-storey wing that was added later and includes a Baronial archway. The building is constructed from squared and snecked, stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings.

The lodge has rounded corners and a rectangular plan, with a diminutive tower that is corbelled to a square shape above. A stone porch is located at the center of the north elevation, leading to the archway, and features a gabled dormer above the first-floor window that breaks the eaves. The ground floor windows are positioned in the curved corners, while a bowed, stone-roofed stair bay is attached to the south side of the west gabled elevation, featuring narrow windows. There is also a window in the gablehead facing the roadside, topped with a semi-circular pediment. The south elevation has a set-off and crowstepped wallhead stack, along with a gabled single-storey wing that is one bay deep, containing a window to the east. A flat-roofed extension has been built against the quadrant and retaining wall to the south, with windows added to it.

The windows are sash and case with a small-pane glazing pattern, and the roof is covered with grey slates. The gables are crowstepped and feature beak skewputts.

The gateway consists of a segmental archway with a beed and hollow surround, topped with a crenellated parapet that holds a blank tablet at the center. There is a pedestrian gateway to the north, along with a corbelled, crenellated lookout turret at the north angle, which includes water spouts.

The quadrant and retaining walls have ashlar gablet coping on the rubble quadrant walls, while the retaining walls are capped with rubble coping.

The gates are made of timber, featuring decorative wrought-iron grilles and coping, along with cast-iron fittings for both the driveway and pedestrian gate.
