Description
The Ceilidh Hall, formerly known as Carberry Chapel, is a square-plan, mono-pitch stone chapel built in 1965 by Ian Lindsay Architects, with David H Reid as the architect. It features a Modern Scandinavian style, characterized by stepped walls and clerestory windows, along with a fully glazed lower wall on the east side, set within a woodland environment. The chapel includes an integral stone bell tower at the southwest corner and a single height spur wall extending east from the south elevation. The exterior is constructed from reclaimed rubble with angled stone cills under the clerestory windows and concrete capping on the bell tower. A metal cross is located in the garden area to the east.
The windows are metal framed with plate glass and heavy timber mullion detailing on the interior, along with small side-hung casements. The entrance features fine glazed doors and lobby doors with vertical metal ribs and a decorative white cross on a broad horizontal push plate. The roof is made of ribbed copper, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
Inside, the hall boasts a good contemporary decorative scheme. A timber screen separates the hall from the main space, which includes some exposed stonework and plaster walls, deep laminated timber beams, and a timber boarded ceiling. There is a plain horizontal boarded banister leading to the balcony organ loft. The lobby and exterior have a square quarry tile floor, while the main space has an overlaid timber floor. Sliding glazed windows are present on the east side.
