Description
This property comprises a probable 17th-century ingleneuk (chimney stack), a single-storey gabled cottage, and a further cottage attached at a right angle. The ingleneuk originally served as the chimney for a single-storey cottage and was likely formerly adjoined to a two-storey house, with the current cottage possibly representing a remnant of that earlier structure. The ingleneuk is constructed of random rubble, including some beach boulders, and projects 8 feet from the cottage. It is approximately 11 feet wide and around 20 feet high, with a coping of rounded slabs. The north, south, and west sides are battered. A low former aperture is visible on the outer east side, and a doorway with timber margins has been inserted on the north return.
The first cottage is joined to the west side of the ingleneuk and is built of random rubble, formerly rendered. It has an enlarged opening to the right side, retaining a moulded jamb. A blocked doorway is located to the left of this opening. The cottage has a corrugated iron roof and brick gable end stacks, currently serving as a store.
The further cottage, adjoined to the first at a right angle at the northwest corner, has a piend roof covered with pantiles. It has four openings facing north, with a doorway in the outer left position, and incorporates rubble retaining walls adjoining it on the north and west. It is believed that Dr J S Richardson compared this ingleneuk with a similar one at Auldhame (now demolished), and Alexander Carse painted a coastal scene depicting the house, identified by Dr John Shaw as being at Thorntonloch.
