Description
This is a mid-19th century limekiln of a square plan with three draws, built as a tunnelled design. It is constructed of coursed stone in long blocks, with sandstone dressings and to the top five courses. The limekiln is situated on ground sloping northwards towards the coastline. A round arched tunnel faces south, running east to west, while round arched draw openings face north, east, and west, feeding the kiln which has an inverted cone shape and is brick-lined. An overgrown quarry is located nearby. Skateraw Limekiln is less renowned than Catcraig Limekiln, by East Barns, which was restored in 1966. Skateraw Harbour was built in the early 19th century to facilitate the export of lime and the import of coal. Further information can be found in B Skinner’s Lime Industry in the Lothians, page 39.
