Description
Castle Mains is a late 18th-century farmhouse, with an addition and alterations dating to the mid-19th century. It is constructed of rubble with painted margins. The south elevation features irregular window openings, with a drawing room wing projecting off-centre to the right. A slate roof conservatory-porch has been added in the re-entrant angle. The first-floor windows of the earlier house are low under the eaves, while larger windows are present on the 19th-century wing facing south and east. The two outer right bays, likely added in the late 18th century, also feature irregular openings.
The north elevation similarly has irregular window openings. A stair window has been inserted in the centre of the earlier house’s elevation, and a piend-roofed porch has been added to the outer left. Later flat-roofed outbuildings extend northwards. The variety of window glazing includes plate glass and 12-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slates, and the house has shouldered wallhead stacks characteristic of the 18th-century section and gable end stacks to all parts.
Inside, there is a winding stair, fluted door jambs, and fielded panelling on the window shutters in the drawing room wing. A steading to the west is not included in the listing and is partly linked to the farmhouse by garden walls.
