Description

The gateway, probably designed by James Smith and Alexander McGill in the early 18th century, originally served as the east entrance to Yester House. It is constructed of square, channelled ashlar, with cornices and stepped caps to the gatepiers, each topped with ball finials. An outstanding wrought-iron overthrow, featuring a coronet, is supported by railed panels at the piers. In the 19th century, smaller, pyramid-capped ashlar piers were added to create flanking pedestrian gates. The stepped capping and small ball finials may have replaced earlier features and appear somewhat imbalanced. The north gateway was designed later by James Adam. A later 19th-century lodge situated near the gateway is not included in the current listing.
