Description

Dirleton Public School, designed by John Alexander Carfrae in 1912, is a single-storey, U-plan school with a later addition. The building features squared and snecked Rattlebag masonry, with dressed and plain ashlar dressings.

The north elevation is almost symmetrical, highlighted by an advanced splayed bay at the center, topped with a coped "colonial" gable that incorporates a stack to the right. A large semi-circular arched window sits at the center, adorned with a raised keystone and a Gibbsian surround. To the left splay, there is a single window. The doors are located in the re-entrant angles, featuring roll-moulded architraves with waved lintels. The end bays are recessed, with a single window breaking the eaves in a cartouched "colonial" gable to the right.

At the rear, there is a modern flat-roofed infill and later gabled wings. The right gable has three large windows, with a semi-circular panel above the taller center window, which has a billet architrave. The left gable features two high windows with a carved quatrefoil and a '1912' panel in the gable head.

The east elevation is simply detailed, while the west elevation consists of three bays to the right, with the center window breaking the eaves in a cartouched "colonial" gable. The left gabled bays contain two paired windows, with a stack to the right skew. The sash and case windows have a multi-pane glazing pattern, and the roof is slated. A leaded apron adorns a domed circular bellcote, which has a fine finial positioned south of the center ridge.

The boundary walls and gateway consist of a rubble wall that is coped to the north front, with quadrant walls and wrought-iron railings. Square ashlar gate piers feature moulded panels to the north and moulded coping, complemented by decorative wrought-iron gates.
