Description

Inveresk Gate is a two-storey and basement villa built in 1774, featuring three bays. The villa has bowed single-storey and basement wings that were added in 1821, along with further 19th-century extensions at the rear. Around 1900, cantilevered, canted windows were added to the south elevation, and a modern doorway replaced the earlier porch. The building is constructed with squared and coursed masonry, accented by ashlar dressings, heavy pointing, droved ashlar bows, and ashlar canted bays, along with a moulded cornice and quoins.

On the south elevation, there is an eaves cornice and a flight of stone steps leading to the modern doorway at the center. To the left, there is a narrow window, while the original first-floor window is retained at the center. The flanking cantilevered and canted windows, supported by cast-iron brackets, have basement windows beneath them. The roof features two slate-hung, canted dormer windows from the late 19th century, along with one piend roofed dormer at the center. The three-light bowed wings have a cornice and blocking course, with tall windows and basement windows below; the wings are topped with piend roofs and have a tall window at the center of each return elevation.

The main villa has plate glass glazing in its sash and case windows, while the bowed wings feature multi-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are corniced end stacks.

The property also includes rubble retaining walls with ashlar coping, and corniced ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps, located by the former stable range to the northeast of the main house.
