Description
Bonnington Farmhouse is a mid to late 18th century farmhouse that was expanded in the early 19th century with the addition of a three-bay house on the south side. The building is constructed of red rubble with ashlar dressings and was formerly harled.
The 18th century section features a three-bay north elevation, with a gabled stair bay projecting at the center. An 1886 gabled outbuilding is attached at ground level to the left, although its doorway has been blocked. A 20th century porch has been added to this section. The west elevation has two bays, one of which has a blocked first-floor window. The east elevation also has two bays, with two ground floor windows and one first-floor window to the left.
The 19th century section has a symmetrical three-bay south (entrance) elevation, featuring a pilastered ashlar doorpiece, a panelled door with a fanlight, and widely spaced openings that include larger ground floor windows. The eaves course is present here. The west elevation has two bays, with one ground floor window and one first-floor window. The east elevation is blank, except for a first-floor window.
The windows throughout the farmhouse feature a combination of 12-pane, 4-pane, and plate glass glazing patterns in sash and case styles. The building has ashlar coped skews and gable end stacks, some of which retain early cans. The roof is covered with grey slates.
Inside, there is a tripartite vestibule screen with a segmental fanlight and a tiled floor. The staircase features a cast-iron balustrade and a skylight in a coved circular opening above. Simple classical timber chimneypieces are present, and the north extension of the earlier house originally served as a milk house, complete with flanking marble shelves. In the washroom, there are two late 19th century enamel sinks made by I and M Craig, Kilmarnock.
The property is also marked by rubble drum gatepiers.
