Description
The lodge at Abbots Croft in North Berwick, designed by Peddie and Washington Browne in 1904, is a two-storey, symmetrical Neo-Georgian house. It is constructed of random rubble Law stone with ashlar dressings and features a dentil eaves course.
On the south elevation, there is a Doric columned doorpiece topped by a dentilled segmentally arched pediment, with a keystone above the double panelled doors. Flanking the entrance are bipartite windows. The outer bays are advanced and gabled, with rectangular projections at the ground floor and Venetian windows above. To the right, there is a single-storey service block.
The north elevation has three central bays, with a canted four-light bay window at the ground floor in the center and to the left. The outer bays are gabled, and there is a canted side projection at the outer right on the ground floor.
The windows throughout are plate glass sash and case, with decorative leaded panes in the hall. The roof is covered with grey slate and features coped stacks.
Inside, the lodge retains fine features, including a Latin inscription above the vestibule door, panelled rooms, and window shutters.
The timber gates have decorative wrought-iron grilles above, and there is a brass bell plaque with an entwined serpent at the gate. The setting includes coped rubble quadrants.
Additionally, there is a single-storey T-plan lodge with a modern addition in the re-entrant angle to the north. This lodge is harled with ashlar cills and has a central door on the west elevation, flanked by tripartite windows. The roof has swept eaves and is covered with red plain tiles, featuring a moulded brick stack at the center and small-pane casement windows.
