Description

Kilduff House is a mid-to-late 18th century mansion house. Originally a 2-storey, 7-bay design, the central block of 3 bays was formerly flanked by lower, recessed bays linking to single-bay pavilions. This original layout is visible to the east, but the western facade has been altered by 19th and 20th century additions. The exterior is white-painted harl with cream ashlar margins, some of which have been renewed in concrete.

The south elevation features a former central doorway which has been blocked and replaced with a window. Flanking this are two tall windows, with three smaller windows above. A recessed bay to the right has lengthened ground and first-floor windows, and the first floor breaks the eaves with a later gabled dormerhead. A broad gabled bay to the outer right contains a French window at ground level where a pseudo-Venetian window previously stood; the outer lights are now blocked. A tall window is positioned at first floor, with the gable head projecting above the eaves and over a band course. Further single-storey additions are recessed to the outer right. To the left of the main block, a bay has been advanced and enlarged with a French door and window at ground level, and a window divided by a stone mullion at first floor. The outer left bay contains a mid-19th century ashlar canted window at ground level which extends upwards to the first floor, topped with a cornice and breaking the band course of the gable. A single-storey, 20th century conservatory addition is recessed at the outer left.

The north elevation has a central doorway with a corniced doorpiece enclosing a fanlight and flanking four-pane lights. There are two tall windows at ground level, and three above. A lower bay to the right features two round-headed windows - small at ground level, and a larger star window above. A blank gable end to the right links the eaves with a band course. To the left of the centre block is a lower bay with a tall window on each floor, breaking the eaves at the first floor within a gabled dormerhead. The outer left bay has windows on each floor to the right of the centre.

The west elevation includes ground-floor additions and three enlarged first-floor windows, each breaking the eaves in gabled dormerheads.

Most windows are sash and case with a predominantly 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered in grey slates, with ashlar coped ridges and gable head stacks. The property includes a walled garden and a small stable block with a courtyard to the west, which have been altered over time.

The house was built for John Home (1722-1808), a dramatist and minister who was given the lease of Kilduff by Sir David Kinloch in 1767. Robert Adam added wings in 1770, which were later rebuilt.
