Description
East Garleton is a late 18th century farmhouse, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century to create a U-shaped plan. The farmhouse is two storeys high and originally had three bays, though later additions have expanded its footprint. The exterior is white-painted harl with raised, painted margins.
The south elevation features an entrance within a later wing that has an architraved and corniced doorpiece, along with a panelled door and fanlight above. A bow-fronted window is positioned to the left, and a small window provides access to the cellar stairs on the right. The right gable end of the original farmhouse includes a window on both the ground and first floors.
The east elevation presents a two-storey, three-bay front with three windows on each floor. The central ground floor window was originally a doorway. A two-storey, two-bay wing adjoins the main block on the right, with two windows at ground level and one window at first floor level. Wings extend to the rear, forming a courtyard.
The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered in grey slates with straight skews and ashlar-margined stacks.
The building was the home of the Skirving family, including the poet Adam Skirving (1719-1803) and his son, Archibald, a portrait painter.
