Description
The Hopetoun Monument, built in 1824, is an impressive structure resembling an industrial stalk, situated atop Byres Hill. It features a circular section and includes an internal spiral stairway that leads to a parapet and viewpoint, which is cantilevered and supported by a machicolated corbel. The monument is constructed from squared and coursed red igneous whinstone, with a base course and a band course on the column and below the corbel. It has a round-arched doorway with an iron grill and a raised surround, as well as tall unglazed slit openings in the column.
