Description

The property comprises a house, coach house and stables, and a walled garden, dating to circa 1820 with later additions. The main house is a two-storey classical building constructed of grey sandstone ashlar on its principal elevations, with lime-harled rubble to the sides and rear, featuring raised and droved ashlar margins.

The south (front) elevation is symmetrical, with three bays, the central bay slightly projecting. A cill course runs along the first floor, topped by a plain cornice and blocking course. The central door is four-panelled, with glazed upper panels, bordered glazing, a deeply moulded surround, and a fanlight above. There are two windows flanking the door, and three windows to the first floor. The west elevation is asymmetrical, with four bays. The southern section continues the treatment of the south elevation in a three-sided canted bay, but with plain eaves. Three further bays, two storeys high, step down in height and recede slightly, with windows aligned vertically in each bay. The east elevation is symmetrical, with two broadly spaced bays. The ground floor window to the north (right) is glazed, while the other three windows are blind. The north (rear) elevation is plain and irregular, with the exception of a tall arched stair window featuring multi-paned glazing with coloured, patterned glass. A single-storey wash-house and a brick-walled lean-to larder line a passageway to a concealed rear door. A narrow pointed archway crowned with a carved rose finial frames a pathway to the east of the wash-house.

The windows to the main elevations are timber sash and case, originally 12-pane, although several have been replaced with 4-pane windows with horns, notably on the front elevation. The roofs are piended, with a leaded platform to the main block, covered in graded grey Scotch slate. There are four stacks, all in ashlar with a projecting blocking course below the cope; the original cans are ornamental, with some replacements.

The interior, partially viewed, retains original features including cornicing, doors, shutters, and an open banistered stairway behind the entrance hall, though some features were lost during dry rot treatment in the 1990s.

To the rear of the property is a cobbled court containing a coach house and stables, all constructed in random rubble with broached and droved dressings, and grey Welsh slate roofs. The single-storey coach house has a segmental arch in the gable (west) with a boarded, two-leaved door and an ashlar skew topped with a thistle finial. Adjacent to this is a two-storey stable and hayloft, gabled to the west with an ashlar skew and crescent finial, hipped to the east, and adjoining a single-storey stable, piended to the south. The stables have original half-doors and top-opening windows, with a boarded door leading to the loft.

The walled garden lies to the north of the main house, enclosed by a wall varying in height and construction: tall brick and rubble on the north, to a low-dressed stone wall on the south, with an iron railing.
