Description
Edington Cottage Hospital, located at 54 St Baldred's Road in North Berwick, was designed by W Ross Young in 1912. This single-storey, symmetrical cottage hospital is built in a U-shape with projecting rear bays and is connected at the center rear to extensions. The exterior is harled with a red ashlar base course and cills.
The south elevation features a central arched entrance, a red ashlar band course at the impost level, and a cornice with coping leading to a gently arched blocking course that includes an inscribed circular panel. Flanking the entrance are bipartite windows and 4-light canted windows in gabled bays, which have applied timber framing and finials. The outer bays also contain bipartite windows, and there are angle loggias with timber balustrades and decorative elements.
The side elevations mirror the details of the south elevation. The windows have small-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes. The building has an eaves cornice and swept eaves, covered with green slates, and features harled Voyseyesque corniced ridge stacks.
