Description
South Lodge at Broxmouth Park is a gate lodge built around 1740 and restored and extended in 1985. It is a two-storey building with a square plan and a pyramid roof. There is a later squat piended stair block that projects to the west, along with cat-slide projections to the north and west. A single-storey, harled piended addition from 1985 connects to the northwest on sloping ground. The lodge is constructed from red rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and chamfered arrises, except for the ground floor window facing the road. The entrance is located on the east elevation, while a rear door is found on the west elevation at the foot of the stair. The windows on the east, south, and north sides feature an 8-pane glazing pattern in narrow sash and casement styles. The roof is covered with grey slates that have decorative diamond detailing on the south side, and there is a leaded ball finial and swept eaves. Angle stacks are present on the north side.
Inside, the first floor has panelling, a deeply coved ceiling, and an angle chimneypiece.
The gatepiers and quadrants date to around 1740 and consist of two fluted ashlar piers with pulvinated bands, moulded coping, and ball finials. Shallow quadrants with ashlar coping lead to an outer pair of panelled gatepiers that have similar coping and ball finials. There is a pedestrian gateway in the north quadrant that leads to the lodge.
