Description
Hurlford Primary School, built in 1905 by Andrew and Newlands, is a large urban school designed in a free Renaissance style. The building is arranged in blocks that surround a top-lit central hall. It is mostly two storeys tall, with three-storey sections that adjoin the hall's gables and are positioned near the main entrances, one of which features a steeple.
The exterior is constructed of stugged and snecked red ashlar with polished dressings. The windows vary in size and design, primarily featuring original timber-framed sash and case styles, many of which have a T-shaped glazing pattern. The roofs are gabled and covered with slate. There is a modern low outshot to the south, which includes a stack that rises full-height against the main wall. The school is set within a walled playground, complete with wrought-iron gates and railings.
