16 Ayr Road, Dalmellington

16 Ayr Road in Dalmellington is a former school house, likely designed by Brown & Lawrence around 1874. This single storey and attic building features three bays and is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings. Notable architectural details include a base course, raised long and short margins, quoins, chamfered reveals, gableted dormers with timber bargeboards, and overhanging eaves with exposed bargeboarding.

The southwest elevation is symmetrical, with a gabled porch that projects from the central bay at the ground floor, featuring a panelled timber door and a fanlight above. There are single windows in the flanking bays on either side, and dormers on the attic floor to the left and right.

The southeast elevation is gabled, while the northeast elevation was not visible in 2001. The northwest elevation is also gabled and asymmetrical, with a single storey wing that projects to the left at ground level and a window on the right return.

The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the ground floor and 4-pane windows in the attic. It is topped with a grey slate roof that has lead ridges, and features cement-faced coped gablehead stacks with circular cans, as well as cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 2001.
