Description

The Old Schoolhouse in Tyninghame is a two-storey house built in 1836, featuring a single-storey L-plan school that was enlarged in 1852. The building is constructed of random rubble with heavily pointed droved ashlar dressings.

On the southeast elevation, the house has three bays, with a broad, advanced gabled outer bay on the right. There is a decorative boarded gabled porch with barge-boarding and small-pane windows located at the centre. The ground floor features tall windows, while the first floor has a slightly smaller window with a dormer above.

The northeast elevation shows the single-storey school projecting to the right, with a gabled bay on the left. This school wing consists of five bays, with three tall windows in the centre and left, and a blocked door in the fourth bay on the right. A former gabled wing, which is now converted into a garage, is attached at right angles to the outer right.

On the west elevation, there is a gabled wing of the house on the right, which has ground and first-floor windows. The advanced gabled wing of the single-storey school is on the left, featuring a tall window to the right and on the south return, along with a lean-to porch attached to the left.

The east elevation is blank, with an ashlar wallhead stack. The schoolhouse has 12-pane glazing, while the large school windows have 24-pane sash and case glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building features ashlar coped skews.

Inside the school, there are two large school rooms with coombed ceilings, double doors, and some boarded dado.
