Description

37 John Finnie Street in Kilmarnock is a 2-storey, 3-bay symmetrical Gothic hall and shops built in 1896, with later alterations and an additional bay to the right. The building features stugged red sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings. The central doorway is designed in a Tudor style and is flanked by modern shop windows at ground level. Above, there is a string course at the first floor, which supports two gables that have 4-centred arches surrounding the windows, along with carving in the arch heads.

The entrance elevation showcases a central doorway made up of semi-octagonal piers topped with a crenellated parapet that bears the carved name 'Laigh Kirk Mission Hall'. The door itself has a pointed-arched head with additional carving. The first floor features a central window set within a gablehead, while the end bays have large gables adorned with foliate carvings at the tips. The tripartite windows in these gables are constructed with stone mullions and transoms, and are framed by arched architraves and hoodmoulds that enclose carved panels, including a central round niche with masks and decorative carving. The additional bay also contains a tripartite window with stone mullions and transoms.

The building is topped with a slate roof, and while the interior was not seen in 2001, it remains part of the overall historical significance of the structure.
