Barnsdale, Auchinleck House

Barnsdale, Auchinleck House is a picturesque two-storey, three-bay cottage dating to circa 1790, situated on the bank of the Dipple Burn. It was built on the site of an earlier property, named Barnsdale, which appears on General Roy’s Map of 1755. The house is associated with the Auchinleck House Estate and was mentioned in the Ordnance Survey Name Book as belonging to Sir James Boswell.

The cottage is constructed of whitewashed and lined stugged rubble with ashlar margins. It features a projecting, polygonal central bay with Gothic detailing. The front elevation displays an advanced, canted, two-storey centre bay incorporating a pointed arched doorway with a recessed four-panelled door and windows to the returns, and a window at the first floor. Windows are also present in the outer bays. Three first-floor windows are set within gabled dormerheads which break the eaves. Lean-to additions are present on either side, and a lower, two-storey piended wing adjoins the property to the right at the rear. The roof is clad in grey slates and features a broad central stack. Windows are four-pane sash and case glazing.
