Description
Auchinleck House is a substantial estate house noted for its association with James Boswell and Samuel Johnson, who visited Lord Auchinleck upon their return from the Hebrides in 1773. The present mansion is attributed to Robert Adam and was likely built around 1760. It is constructed of ashlar. The central block is rectangular and features an elaborately decorated pediment supported by four flat Ionic pilasters. The house has two storeys and a raised basement, approached by a flight of steps. A balustraded parapet and urns top the pediment. Flanking the main block are two pavilions, each topped with unusual ornamental towers, which are detached from the house but connected by curved screen walls.
