Description

This is a two-storey, five-by-three bay commercial building, likely dating to around 1870, possibly designed by J & RS Ingram. It is located at 51-53 John Finnie Street, Kilmarnock. The building is constructed of red Ballochmyle sandstone ashlar, with the ground floor rusticated.

The principal east elevation features a stepped approach to central paired timber doors, each with four lower panels and a large, rectangular fanlight above. Flanking the doors are narrower rectangular windows with moulded sills and architraved surrounds, with similarly treated larger windows in the outer bays. The lintels of these ground-floor windows form a band course; rusticated pilasters with slightly advanced bases divide the bays. A small, rectangular black street sign reading "JOHN FINNIE STREET" in gold lettering is located on the extreme left. A chamfered angle is present at the ground floor. Above the ground floor is a dentilled cornice that transitions into a projecting first floor with three identical arched bays. Each bay has a blind balustraded sill, engaged columns on either side supporting an architraved lintel with a mask keystone, and a paired architraved band course above. Projecting Corinthian columns divide the windows and are situated at the outer angles, with decorative winged lion heads in the frieze above. An arched angle connects to the Woodstock/Grange Place elevation. A dentilled, modillion cornice tops the elevation, which is finished with a balustraded parapet.

The north elevation adjoins 43-49 John Finnie Street, which is listed separately. The west (rear) elevation abuts a single-storey stable building at 3 Grange Place, also listed separately.

The south elevation mirrors the east's design. At ground floor level, there are three regularly spaced rectangular bays with moulded sills and architraved surrounds; the central bay is narrower. As on the east elevation, the lintels form a band course, with rusticated pilasters dividing the bays. A contemporary black rectangular street sign reading "WOODSTOCK STREET" is adjacent to a smaller street sign that reads "GRANGE PLACE," both picked out in gold lettering. A dentilled cornice over the ground floor leads to a projecting first floor echoing the design of the east elevation, with blind balustraded sills, engaged columns, architraved lintels, mask keystones, paired architraved bands, Corinthian columns, and winged lion heads. A dentilled, modillion cornice and balustraded parapet complete the elevation.

Later additions include single-pane timber windows on the ground floor elevations, and three-pane timber casement windows on the first floor, paired panes with a semi-circular fixed arched window above each. The roof is shallow, piended, and covered in grey slate, with concealed cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior originally comprised offices and later a bank; the ground floor bank’s wooden panelling is now absent. The first-floor office retains a fine plastered ceiling with ornate ceiling roses, plaster cornicing, and angles.
