Description

This is a three-storey, commercial building located at 100-106 John Finnie Street, Kilmarnock. It was likely designed by J & RS Ingram and constructed around 1876. The building is of symmetrical design, consisting of four bays by five bays, and is built in the Italianate style using coursed red sandstone ashlar. Prominent giant angle pilasters run the full height of the building.

The principal west-facing elevation (John Finnie Street) has been altered. At the first floor of the second bay is a doorway, originally one of two, leading to an interior space. It now features a timber door with three panes and a blind rectangular fanlight above, and a full-height pilaster to the side. The first bay has a modern shop front with a door on the right and a large painted fascia above. To the right, a former large shop has been subdivided, with a modern shop at the left, and the original entrance now containing a small window alongside a larger window, topped with a fascia displaying the names "McSHERRY HALLIDAY" and "J.H. THOMSON". A heavy band course runs above this. The first floor has four bipartite windows with chamfered arrises and lintels, each set on a panelled apron and flanked by pilasters. A narrower band course sits above this. The second floor mirrors the first, with four arched bipartite windows, panelled aprons, and matching pilasters. A bracketed eaves course, corniced and slightly stepped in the central bays, completes the elevation.

The north elevation is partially obscured by a modern bank building, and the north gable could not be viewed in 2001. The rear elevation (east) is hidden by the adjacent Bank Street building.

The south-facing elevation (Nelson Street) is symmetrical, with a central doorway now blocked. A pair of blind windows flank the doorway, and the first floor comprises five regularly spaced, segmental-headed windows with shallow apron panels, resting on a heavy band course. The second floor has five round arched windows with shallow apron panels, set on a narrower band course. A bracketed eaves course and cornice are also present.

The upper two floors contain two-pane timber sash and case windows, with arched heads on the second floor. Some windows are blind, though the frame remains. Modern plate glass windows are on the ground floor, and blind windows on the ground floor of the Nelson Street elevation are filled with red sandstone. The roof is pitched grey slate with a gable to the north. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with gutters concealed within the cornice and downpipes on the side elevations. Yellow brick stacks with some plain yellow cans remain on the east gable and have been substantially lowered on the north gable, although a stack remains at full height to the roofline.

The ground floor interior has been altered to create three shops, and the original pilastered doorway has been modified, resulting in the loss of the timber panelled door. The upper floors are used as offices and were not inspected in 2001.
