Description

Liff House, located at the Royal Dundee Liff Hospital, was designed by Charles Edward and Thomas Saunders Robertson in 1879. This two-storey and attic building has a rectangular plan and features twin crowstepped gables. It is constructed from snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and has a grey slate roof. The house includes a base course and features single, bipartite, and canted windows with chamfered jambs and mullions, which are stop-chamfered at the bottom. The canted windows have crenellated parapets, and the glazing pattern consists of plate glass sash and case windows, along with corniced gable stacks.

On the west elevation, the gable is on the left, with a panelled door and fanlight in a moulded doorcase to the right. There is a bipartite window to the left and another bipartite window on the first floor, along with a narrow window in the attic. The right gable features a canted window, a bipartite window on the first floor, and a narrow attic window. The narrow centre bay has a bipartite window on the ground floor and a single window on the first floor.

The south elevation has a single window on both the ground and first floors in the centre, a canted window on the ground floor to the left with a bipartite window above, and a slightly advanced gable to the right that includes a four-light canted window on the ground floor, a bipartite window on the first floor, and a narrow window in the attic.

On the north elevation, there is a canted window on the ground floor to the right, a fire escape leading to a door formed from a window on the first floor, and a window on the first floor to the left. There is also a door and bipartite window in a single-storey bay on the left, with further lower additions advanced to the far left.

The east elevation features a door and window in the centre, with a tall bipartite stair window above. The left gable has a single window on both the ground and first floors, along with a window in the attic. The right gable includes an advanced single-storey bay on the ground floor.

Inside, the house showcases good plasterwork in the principal rooms, featuring maple leaves, and in the stair area, there are masks along with timber stair balusters.
