Description
The Gilfillan Memorial Church, dated 1887 and designed by Malcolm Stark, is a two-storey church situated at 22-6 Whitehall Crescent in Dundee. It is positioned centrally within Whitehall Crescent, terminating the view from Whitehall Street and extending to Dock Street at the rear. Constructed from sandstone ashlar with a grey piended slate roof, it exhibits a Baroque-detailed facade.
The Whitehall Crescent elevation is three-bay and symmetrical. It features a base course, with the ground floor channelled and angle pilaster strips supporting a corniced base to the first floor. Above this are four Ionic pilasters, fluted to the top, which support a corbelled entablature with a balustraded parapet. A broken segmental pediment sits centrally, with pyramidal finialled dies at the angles. The central bay is slightly advanced, showcasing a keystoned splayed doorcase containing a two-leaf panelled door, within a pilastered and pedimented doorpiece decorated with a festooned cartouche and florid sculpture. Narrow leaded sidelights and a fanlight are incorporated, with the pediment projecting over the fanlight. A pilastered window is positioned above the door on the first floor, accompanied by narrow sidelights and columned mullions, topped by a keyblocked and moulded lunette with leaded glazing. Flanking this are recessed bays containing an original shopfront on the ground floor, with a tripartite window above, and a first-floor window with a Gibbs surround and oculus.
The Dock Street elevation is three-storey and attic, with five bays. It is constructed of sandstone courses with ashlar dressings and a corniced ground floor. Giant pilasters rise to the second floor, supporting a corniced entablature. A vehicle entrance is situated at the centre of the ground floor, flanked by altered shopfronts, with two-leaf doors and fanlights in the outer bays. A corniced bipartite window is centrally placed on the first floor, flanked by canted windows to the left and right. The second floor features three windows with leaded glazing, while outer windows extend through both the first and second floors, incorporating a dividing panel at the centre. The three-bay attic floor has three tripartite, leaded-glazed windows.
The interior comprises a large auditorium with a two-tier U-plan gallery; the second tier is now partitioned from the main space. Decorative cast-iron panels adorn the first-tier gallery, with wooden panelling on the second tier. Cast-iron columns support embellished Ionic capitals. Most of the pews have been removed, retaining those from the first-tier gallery. Leaded lights illuminate the clerestory, and the compartmentalised ceiling features a key-pattern decoration. A three-tier dais houses a communion table, pulpit, and organ console on each level. Flanking balustraded stairs lead to the second tier, and the third tier is decorated with decorative panels featuring a swag motif. A large, three-bay, classically-detailed organ case is present.
