Description
This is a stable and coach house, dated 1892 and attributed to James MacLaren, forming part of a larger L-plan villa situated at 21, 23, 25 Forthill Road, Dundee. The villa is constructed of tooled sandstone on the front elevation, with snecked rubble at the rear, and features ashlar dressings, margined angles, and a grey slate roof. Decorative cornices, rectangular cast-iron rainwater goods with dated hoppers, shouldered and corniced stacks with decorative cans, and moduled eaves are noteworthy external details. Windows are predominantly sash and case with two panes at the bottom and one at the top on the south, east, and west elevations, and eight panes at the rear.
The south elevation features a porch in the centre of the three-bay main block, a window, a door with a semi-circular fanlight and keystoned, moulded doorcase, and moduled cornice with a cast-iron parapet. A lower, two-bay service block sits to the left, with security bars on the ground floor windows. The east elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a central advanced tripartite window with pilasters, decorative capitals, a corniced frieze, and a strapwork pediment. A balconied window with a cast-iron parapet sits above. Tripartite canted windows are positioned at either end of the elevation on the ground floor, with bipartite windows above.
The north elevation has a door to the left and two windows to the right, mirrored by two windows at the first floor. The west elevation appears as a gable with a ground floor window and a door in the return elevation, along with two first-floor windows. A re-entrant block features two ground floor windows, one first-floor window on the main block’s far left, and all ground floor windows have security bars.
Internally, decorative plaster cornices, original fireplaces, a kitchen bellboard, a first-floor maid’s room bellboard, a well stair with carved newel posts and balusters are present.
The stable and coach house itself is built of rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and a grey slate roof. A main block to the right has later garage doors on the ground floor, whilst an attic hayloft door has a coped pediment, gablet kneelers, coped skews with finials and gablet kneelers, and bracketted skewputts. A lower, single-storey bay is located to the left, containing an off-centre door, a small, blocked round headed window with corbelled margins and a prominent moulded stack at the left angle, alongside a seven-pane sash and case window on the return. The interior of the coach house retains boarded flooring and the remains of trevises.
The property is complemented by two pyramidal capped, panelled gatepiers with cast-iron gates to the east, a cast-iron railing on a low wall, two round-section pyramidal capped ashlar gatepiers to the south, a cast iron gate and a section of railing to the southeast, and a rubble wall with round coping to the south. This building has group value.
