Description
Red Cottage, located at 80 Forthill Road in Dundee, is a single-storey bungalow designed by Alexander Johnston and David N Baxter in 1905. The building features an irregular plan and is constructed with stretcher bond red brick, complemented by pink sandstone dressings and a cill course on the south, east, and west elevations. The roof is covered with green slates, adorned with terracotta ridge tiles and finials, and has deep boarded eaves. The windows are plate glass casements with fixed multi-pane top lights, and there are tall, slightly battered brick stacks with ashlar coping and uniform moulded terracotta cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron with slightly mannered brackets, and the roof has a piended design.
On the west elevation, there is a two-leaf door with a leaded fanlight, sheltered by a swept down canopy supported by timber brackets. To the left of the door is a leaded top-hopper window, and further left is a four-light rectangular window flanked by side windows. The right side features a clasping polygonal angle turret with five bipartite windows and a finialled octagonal roof.
The south elevation is symmetrical with five bays. The three central bays include a bipartite window in the middle, a four-light window to the left, and a door with adjoining lights to the right, all beneath a broad swept down roof that is splayed at both ends and supported by four plain timber columns. Angle turrets similar to those on the west elevation are located at the outer left and right.
The east elevation has two windows on the left, with a slightly lower and recessed kitchen on the right that also has two windows. The north elevation features a kitchen gable on the left with two windows, and a slightly lower laundry area adjoining on the right, which includes a door and two windows. This side also masks a small kitchen court with various doors and windows, accessible by a gate at the right re-entrant, and has several rooflights on the main roof.
Inside, the cottage retains its original features, including a panelled outer hall, chimney pieces, kitchen and pantry fittings, bell-pulls, and a complete bell-board that is still in working order.
The property is enclosed by a rubble boundary wall topped with round coping stones on the north, east, and west sides.
