Description

23 Seafield Road in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, is a two-storey, three-bay house built in the Jacobean style around 1850, attributed to architect James MacLaren, with the drawing room wing added slightly later. The house features a rendered and lined exterior with an ashlar base, first-floor cill and eaves courses, canted windows, an entrance porch, and gablehead stacks on the east and west sides. It has a slate roof and mainly consists of two- and four-pane sash and case windows with bracketed cills, along with saw-tooth coping on the skews and bracketed skewputts.

On the southeast elevation, there is a single-storey entrance porch at the centre of the re-entrant, featuring a door with a plate glass fanlight set in a recessed panel, angle pilasters, and a segmental window at the right return. The arcaded parapet has semi-circular pedimented dies at the centre. To the right of the main block, there is one window, and on the first floor, there are two windows with gabled dormerheads and louvred arrow-slit openings. The drawing room wing on the left has a full-height canted window with a vase course on the south gable, chamfered architraves, moulded cornices on each floor, an arcaded parapet, an attic arrow-slit window, and a stone finial, along with blinded windows at the ground and first floors on the right return, featuring painted Venetian blinds at ground level.

The east elevation shows the gable end of the original house projecting at the centre with an attic arrow-slit window and paired moulded octagonal stacks. The entrance porch and drawing room wing are recessed to the left, while a service wing is slightly recessed to the right, containing two windows at both the ground and first floors.

On the west elevation, the gable end of the original house is at the centre, with windows at the ground and first floors on the right, an attic window, and a gablehead stack similar to the east gable. There is a brick lean-to addition at the left angle, with a door and window at the recessed service wing on the left. The blank wall-plane of the drawing room wing on the right features a chimney breast and a shouldered wallhead stack.

Inside, the ground floor boasts foliate cornices, ceiling roses, and consoles, along with two classically detailed timber chimney pieces. The first floor includes the drawing room, which has a marble chimneypiece (with the mantle missing), a coomb ceiling with compartmentalised plasterwork, and a decorative cornice and rose.

The property is enclosed by rubble round-coped boundary walls to the east and south, with a corniced ashlar gateway on the east side.
