Description

23 Douglas Terrace in West Ferry, Dundee, is a single-storey and attic semi-detached villa built around 1838 by George Mathewson. The building features a Picturesque style with harled walls, painted margins, a slate roof, and stone stacks topped with decorative cans. It has margined angles and deep eaves, though some timber and aluminium window frames are out of character.

The south elevation has a shallow U-plan with two widely spaced windows at the center and doors in the re-entrant angles on the left and right, with a modern porch on the left. Flanking gables are slightly advanced and feature V-shaped windows and open-work parapets, with additional windows in the gables above and finials. There are two angle-headed dormers and central moulded and vertically channelled ridge stacks, along with twin moulded and ribbed octagonal stacks on either side.

The east elevation is plain, with a slightly advanced gable end at the center that has a slim blind round-headed window at the attic level, and a modern single-storey bow window addition on the right.

The west elevation also has a slightly advanced gable end at the center, featuring a window at ground floor and a slim blind round-headed window at the corbelled attic.

The north elevation has been altered with various ground floor additions. A cast-iron lamp standard with a lantern and 'Dundee Harbour' on ladder bars is located close to the house at the southeast corner. Surrounding the property is a rubble enclosing wall with rounded coping on the north, south, and east sides, and a curved section on the west.

Inside, some original horizontally-split shutters remain in the ground floor rooms, along with an egg and dart cornice featuring an ornate anthemion and palmette frieze, as well as a ceiling rose.
