Description

31-37 Union Street in Dundee is an earlier 19th-century, four-storey building with an attic. This eight-bay tenement features shops on the ground floor and is situated on a corner site. The exterior is constructed of sandstone coursers with a grey slate roof that is piended at the Yeaman Shore elevation. The ground floor has a cornice, and there is an eaves course above. The windows on the first and second floors have concrete architraves, while the third floor features margined windows. There are box and canted dormers, with modern two-pane glazing on the first floor, some original 12-pane timber sash and case glazing, and modern frames that are out of character on the second and third floors. The building has corniced ridge stacks and corniced and shouldered wallhead stacks.

On the Union Street elevation, there are two close doors flanked by pilastered (altered) shopfronts, with eight windows on each upper floor, one box dormer, and two canted dormers, along with two wallhead stacks. The Yeaman Shore elevation features a pilastered public house on the ground floor that has been restored to a sympathetic style, with four windows on each upper floor. However, the first floor has a blocked window at the second bay from the left, and the second and third floors have a blocked window at the second bay from the right, along with a cut-down wallhead stack.

The interior has not been seen.
