Description
Caledon West Wharf is a wharf located in Dundee Harbour, built in 1890 by David Cunningham and later widened in three stages by J Hannay Thomson and the Yorkshire Hennebique Contracting Company in 1903 and 1909. The first part of the wharf opened in 1905 and is situated west of Cattle Wharf, without roll-on/roll-off capabilities. The second stage, also known as Princess Alexandra Wharf, is slightly advanced. By 1909, Caledon West Wharf was extended to accommodate the installation of engines and boilers in Caledon ships.
The wharf features an ashlar front and is designed for deep-water ships, supported by an open reinforced concrete framework. It includes Mouchel Patent cylinder piers that alternate with square-section pillars, which have diagonal raking struts behind them. The surface is made of shuttered concrete, and it is equipped with timber fenders and cast-iron bollards. Caledon West Wharf shares a similar construction style.
