Eastern Necropolis, Arbroath Road, Dundee

Eastern Cemetery Lodge, located on Arbroath Road in Dundee, was designed by William Scott and David MacKenzie and completed in 1863. The entrance features a triple arched decorated gothic design, constructed from ashlar treated with linseed oil. The north and south elevations are identical, showcasing nookshafted openings with mask label stops. The structure includes buttresses with trefoil-headed niches that house statuary and crocketted finials. A castellated parapet rises at the center to display the arms of Dundee.

The entrance is adorned with cast-iron gates that feature winged souls and gilded finials, along with curving traceried screen walls that end in square piers. Similar ashlar piers are found to the north, near the lodge, along with lower boundary walls.

The North Lodge, located at 1 Old Craigie Road, is a simple three-bay structure with a central gable and an attic lancet. It has an unfortunate lean-to porch and a slate roof, with gable end stacks that have been rebuilt. The windows are sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern.

Notable monuments within the cemetery include:

• JAMES SMEATON: A merchant from Panmure Works in Carnoustie, this 1866 monument is a replica of the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, featuring a Corinthian-columned rotunda on a square plinth topped with a cross finial.

• KIRKLAND: A merchant's monument designed in the style of James MacLaren, it features a gothic trefoil-arcade on small granite shafts, supporting a piended stone cover.

• CAMERON, DAVID AND ISABELLA: This 1902 square granite monument is topped with a draped urn and is notable for its sinuous art nouveau wrought-iron railings.

• CHARLES BARRIE: A granite monument dedicated to the ship-owner and Lord Provost, it is modeled after the Cenotaph and includes low boundary walls.
