Description

10-12 Exchange Street in Dundee is a four-storey tenement building designed by David Mackenzie in 1832. It features six bays facing Castle Street and seven bays on Exchange Street, with a quadrant bay at the corner. The building has a public house and shopfronts on the ground floor, constructed from sandstone ashlar with ashlar dressings, some of which have been refaced in concrete. The roof is covered with piended slate.

The ground floor is painted and has pilasters, with Greek Doric columns at the angle. A corniced frieze adorned with four laurel wreath motifs is present on each elevation. There are cill courses at the first and second floors, an eaves course, and margined angles. The windows are mostly two-pane timber sash and case, with architraves and cornices on the first floor, architraves on the second, and margined designs on the third. The building features ashlar-coped skews, harled axial stacks, and a linked wallhead stack on Exchange Street.

On the Castle Street elevation, there is a close door at the center of the ground floor, six windows on the first floor (with an additional small window between the first and second bays from the right), and six windows on both the second and third floors. The slightly recessed quadrant bay to the right has a window on all floors.

The Exchange Street elevation includes a close door in the second bay from the right and seven windows on the first, second, and third floors.

Inside, the first-floor front rooms have plaster ceilings and panelling, while the rear features two 20th-century stained glass windows.
