Description
Prospect House is a large, irregularly-shaped house, built in 1864 by Charles Kinnear of Peddie and Kinnear, and constructed in the French château style. It is two storeys and has an attic. The house is built of snecked rubble with cream ashlar dressings and a grey slate roof. A base course is present at the advanced gables on the south elevation, and string courses run along the first floor of the south, east, and west elevations. Deep, bracketed eaves are also a feature, alongside single and bipartite windows with chamfered reveals. Most windows have six panes, although the principal south and west windows have three panes without vertical astragals. The building has plain moulded bargeboards, steeply pitched gables, and corniced linked stacks.
The south elevation is dominated by a gabled section, splayed at its angles and corbelled to form a square at the eaves. A tripartite projecting window is visible on both the ground and first floors, with a gabled dormer set into a lean-to roof. The apex reveals a kingpost and collar, topped with a weathervane finial. To the left of this is a tripartite window and a blank heraldic panel, above which are two gabled windows that break through the eaves to the first floor. A lower, two-bay gabled wing extends to the far right. A canted gable features on the far left, also corbelled to the first floor and displaying a four-light window on the ground floor and a bipartite window that breaks through the eaves on the first floor, alongside a blank heraldic panel and a faceted roof with a gabled dormerhead.
The west elevation has a gabled section splayed at its angles, corbelled to square at the eaves where the initials ‘PK’ are visible above the left corbel. A segmental window is set within a square-headed moulded architrave, likely the original main doorway. A window is situated above on the first floor, and the roofspace contains a panel inscribed 'ISCI'. A bipartite window is recessed to the right, with a gabled dormerhead breaking through the eaves. A further gable is positioned on the far right, featuring a bipartite window on the ground floor and a single window on the first.
The east gable has a harled ground floor, a door to the right, and a lean-to extending to the re-entrant angle on the far right. Two windows are present on the first floor.
The north elevation is asymmetrical, featuring three gables, with the return bay of the west elevation visible to the right. A modern entrance porch has replaced an earlier castellated entrance on the right gable, and various windows are present.
Internally, the house has been substantially modernised.
Two ashlar gatepiers with truncated pyramidal caps stand at the south end of the property, alongside modern gates and railings. Sculptured bronze deer by David Annand are also present.
